PALEMBANG, Indonesia, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian team Chef de Mission (CdM) Syafruddin said here on Tuesday that sports which the country is participating in at the Asian Games co-host city of Palembang have great potential to win gold medals for the host nation.
Speaking during his visit to watch the matches and inspect facilities in venues hosting the Asia Games in Palembang's Jakabaring Sports Center, Syarfruddin said that all national athletes assigned to contend in the Asian Games have the capability to earn gold medals.
"I hope we can get many gold medals from the sports held here. We estimated that half of 10 sports conducted here have the potentialities to earn gold medals," Syarfruddin said.
During the visit, the Indonesian CdM was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Human and Cultural Development Puan Maharani.
To assure Indonesian team's performance in attaining Asiad targets, he said his office would continue monitoring the situation until the Asian Games concludes on September 2.
Citing results of his office's evaluation of national athletes contending in Asiad sports hosted by Jakarta and Palembang, the former deputy police chief said achievements of athletes in qualification rounds and those who had already earned gold medals met his office's targets for the first three days of the Asiad.
Indonesia has set a target to win at least 16 gold medals, expected to bring the nation among the 10 best medal-performing countries and regions.
Southeast Asia's largest country finished 17th in the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.
