BUENOS AIRES, July 20 (Xinhua) -- World champions New Zealand began their 2019 Rugby Championship campaign with a 20-16 victory over Argentina here on Saturday.
The All Blacks took a 20-9 first-half lead after tries from Brodie Retallick and Ngani Laumape - and accurate kicking from Beauden Barrett - at the Jose Amalfitani stadium.
The Pumas narrowed the deficit after the interval through an Emiliano Boffelli try, but the world No. 1 held their nerve to secure their 28th victory in 29 matches against the South American side.
"Massive credit to the Argentines. They put us under real pressure right up until the final whistle so they can be proud," New Zealand captain Sam Cane said. "But we stayed calm and composed to hang in there for the win."
Argentina will meet Australia in Brisbane on July 27 while New Zealand will host South Africa.
